Hajnal Nemeth (Hungary, 1972) is representing Hungary at the 54 La Biennale di Venezia, in 2011
Air Out (4'32'') © 2008, Hajnal Nemeth

At the beginning of Hajnal Némeths' film “Air Out” we hear an organ performance of J. S. Bachs “Air” and see a close up of a static musicians' back. As the camera zooms out and the musician switches off the organs' air pump, the sound of the piece breaks until it disintegrates into a noisy pattern of keyboard and pedal clicks concluding with silence. We discover that the organ-player, shown in full now, is performing a set of convulsive movements and that she resembles a puppet attached by strings to the gigantic instrument [...]

This is "not" a work of art

«In an astonishing move, the European Commission has reversed a decision made in a UK tax tribunal, and refused to classify works by Dan Flavin and Bill Viola as "art". This means that UK galleries and auction houses will have to pay full VAT (value added tax, which goes up to 20% next year) and customs dues on video and light works, when they are imported from outside the EU. The decision is binding on all member states.» [in The Art Newspaper, No. 219, December 2010]

I'm wondering, what would happen to Turner Prize 2010 winner Susan Philipsz's works! since she uses her own voice to create uniquely evocative sound installations that play upon and extend the poetics of specific, often out-of-the-way spaces. Or even to James Turrell's light constructions!

It’s as if the artworld time-travelled to 1988...‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’

newsfrom...201012

With approximately fifteenth thousand visitors to Lisbon Art Fair - these belong to their public more than to entrepreneurial business associations or hollow promotion strategies implemented by ramshackle houses - the market has surprised everyone. Apart for the supranational reasons that had keep occupied the national and global media at the previous fair's place, the paradox lies in that although Portugal is living through moments of deep sociological crises and in a time of intense financial difficulty, art lovers came and have bought a lot more than in previous years, whilst collectors and art dealers have engaged in greater than normal financial risks. Gladly! People understand that if they have cash it is better to buy art works - instead of putt it in a bank which bring very little interest, while the stock market is a tricky place to gamble. In the end, art and real estate are very good investment funds. Art is not only a good investment, but you will have an artwork on your wall which you can look at everyday and which brings awesome pleasure.

Nico Vascellari, Untitled Landscape, 2008
Collage on paper, 27.5X21cm

Being both musician and artist, Nico Vascellari combines his sculptural installations with sound performances. Through his performances he investigates the relation between the viewer, the space and the action. He is drawn to cult figures connected to the music scene with whom he collaborates or to which he reacts in his work. Inspired by his fascination with rituals, spiritualism and cult, he reflects on the thought of destruction as a driving energy to the construction of things. This leads him into the idea of mapping spaces, energies, sounds and nature, all of which are central themes in his work. [...]

Nico Vascellari (Born in Vittorio Veneto, Italy in 1976) is a hardcore punk musician and a visual artist. Vascellari work's with different media including performance, sculpture, video, sound installation and collage. In 2005 Vascellari was awarded “The First International Prize for Performance_01D” and in 2007 was short-listed for the Furla Prize. His work has been exhibited at the “DB Collection Italy”, Deutsche Bank, Milan and “Apocalittici e Integrati”, MAXXI Museum, Rome. His work was included in the 52nd Venice Biennial (where he was awarded the Prize for Italian Art) the Manifesta (2008) and the Quadriennale di Roma (2008). He also presented a performance at Marina Abramovic Institute in 2010.

The Aunt (Nada) (2006), by Paula Rego
Pastel, 178x120cm

Estimate £250,000 - £350,000 (Sotheby's, London, December 15th 2010, Lot. 105)

'This comes from a famous Spanish novel called Nada ('nothing') by Carmen Laforet, which I read in English. It was published in 1945 but the action takes place just after the Spanish Civil War. Apart from those references, it could be a Portuguese novel. A girl called Andrea goes to study at her aunt's house in Barcelona. The story is about her growing up and coming to terms with the difficulty of things. It's the most dysfunctional family you can imagine, and poor. The aunt is a difficult woman and a figure of authority, but she is also vulnerable because she is having an affair with a married man. Also in the family are a grandmother and two brothers, Andrea's cousins, one of whom is married and has a little boy who is very sickly: I have represented him in the form of a little skeleton, which Lila made. The little boy's mother is a bit of a tart. The grandmother busies herself looking after this child. The older brother is a gifted musician who plays the violin very well. There is also a maid they always had maids, whether they were poor or not and she controls a lot of the household. [...]
