according to common knowledge bales of straw/hay can mean two things : the last straw a further difficulty or annoyance, typically minor in itself but coming on top of a whole series of difficulties, that makes a situation unbearable, or make hay make good use of an opportunity while it lasts.
Still, it could be a straw in the wind meaning a slight hint of future developments, or refer to evil considered as a destructive force (evil suffered, physical torment or mental suffering).
